Birthday Books
King’s Oak is proud to be a healthy school and we try to encourage healthy lifestyles in everything that we do. When a child is celebrating a birthday, there have been some occasions when parents have bought in sweets or cakes for the class. While this is a lovely gesture and I am sure appreciated by the children, it does not fit well with our healthy ambitions - if every child did this, that would be a lot of sugar being consumed! We love to celebrate birthdays but please consider doing this in a healthy way. Something that works really well and creates a lasting birthday tribute is to donate a birthday book to the class. Thank you for your support with this.
Parent Staff Association - Rainbow Raffle
Huge thanks for the whole community for getting behind the rainbow raffle concept for our non-uniform day today. The children looked amazing in their rainbow of colours and the amount of donations was phenomenal! These colourful hampers will now be prizes for the Summer Fair taking place on Saturday 24th June. You can see some of the wonderful donations below.
The King's Oak Superzone
The Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames has been successful in their application to implement a local School Superzone around King’s Oak Primary School over the next 12 months.
What is a School Superzone?
School Superzones aim to create healthier and safer places for children and young people to live, learn and play. The zone will cover the area around King’s Oak and is designed to protect children’s health and encourage healthy behaviours.
What can you expect?
Within the zone we will be looking to promote:
● Physical activity through active travel to school, e.g. walking and cycling
● School Streets feasibility (an initiative where motor traffic is restricted in the immediate vicinity of a school to make the roads safer and the air cleaner)
We will also be working to reduce unhealthy food and drink sales and advertisements in the local area, to make it easier for young people and their families to make healthy choices on their way to and from school.
What will happen next?
To get started, we want to hear from parents and teachers about how they could be supported to lead a healthy lifestyle. Participation will take no more than 5 minutes and you can complete our short survey online.
In the meantime, we have also put together a short list of local opportunities on Connected Kingston - including some free and low-cost options - that can support children and young people to stay active.
Year 6 School Journey - Thames Young Mariners
On Monday, Year 6 will be heading off on their exciting school journey to Thames Young Mariners where they will be living under canvas and enjoying lots of water and land based activities including kayaking, orienteering, stand-up paddleboarding, raft building, woodland skills and more! I will be joining them, so please seek out another member of the Senior Leadership Team if you require anything between Monday and Wednesday.
School Book Fair
Coming up in a few weeks time will be our annual book fair - this is always very popular and a great way to get good value books whilst also supporting the school. Look out for the sale in the playground during the week beginning Monday 19th June.
Enjoy a wonderful weekend - see you next week.
