Science
Intent
Science is not a boy’s game, it’s not a girl’s game. It’s everyone’s game. It’s about where we are and where we’re going.’ Nichelle Nichols, NASA ambassador.
At King’s Oak, we aim for all pupils to recognise the importance of science in everyday life. Our curriculum provides opportunities to explore and discover the most influential individuals who come from a range of different backgrounds in the history of science. Children build upon their understanding of the world through biology, chemistry and physics through immersive learning, including scientific visits.
Alongside our learning habits, our pupils develop a sense of curiosity and excitement about natural phenomena led through scientific enquiry and cross curricular opportunities. Through regular varied opportunities for scientific enquiry, pupils are able to explore a range of approaches to pose and answer intriguing questions, addressing misconceptions.
Throughout the school, children are continuously encouraged to develop spoken language by applying scientific vocabulary before developing this further to record scientific concepts clearly and precisely in writing . All children are encouraged to develop and use a range of skills including observations, planning and investigations to build upon knowledge of key concepts. At King’s Oak, we provide opportunities for our pupils to develop a strong understanding of the world around them and understand the uses and implications of science in the past, present and future.
