Year 6
Here at King’s Oak, year 6 is an exciting time preparing for SATs, transitioning to secondary school and immersing ourselves in a stimulating and enriching curriculum. Our aim in year 6 is for all pupils to leave us in the summer as confident and independent individuals who will thrive in secondary school. Throughout the year, we focus on developing a growth mindset as well as developing our self-motivation, resilience and resourcefulness learning habits to ensure that all pupils achieve to the best of their ability.
In English, we study thought-provoking and challenging texts to produce imaginative or informative writing: The Silver Sword, The Sleeper and the Spindle, The Graveyard Book and The Hunger Games. We delve into the history and geography of the second World War, exploring life for children in London as well as in Europe. In the spring term, we begin to think about our impact on the environment covering the topic of Climate change through varied lessons and even produce our own podcasts to highlight and examine the potential threats posed by a changing climate. Deepening our science knowledge and skills, we study the topics of electricity, light, inheritance and evolution, animals including humans and living things and their habitats. In computing, we delve deeper into evaluating the reliability of information on the Internet, explore our digital footprint and continue to develop our coding skills. Through sports lessons, we refine our ability to work collaboratively through cricket, tennis, hockey, netball and touch rugby and develop our creativity, strength and balance through gymnastics and dance.
We also get to go on really exciting trips including visits to the theatre and junior citizenship. In the summer term, we take part in a fun-filled 4-day trip to Thames Young Mariners where we take part in a range of outdoor activities including canoeing and forest skills - we even get to sleep in a yurt! During the final week of the summer term, we end our year with wonderful assemblies and a leaver’s party.
