Year 5
The Earth and space
This week Year 5 started their new unit of science - The Earth and space. To begin our learning, we talked about the shape of the Earth. We learnt that it is not spherical, as most people think, but actually an ellipsoid. An ellipsoid is very similar to a sphere but looks like it has been a bit squashed. Next, we looked at the sizes of the Moon, Earth and Sun. We discovered that the Earth is 4 times bigger than the moon and that the Sun is 100 times bigger than the Earth. We used a scale so we could draw the Sun, Earth and Moon on the playground. We used chalk, string and a ruler. Doing this showed us that the Sun is huge!
