Year 5

Brain Buddies

Over the whole of the Spring term, we have had Olivia from the Mental Health Support Team in Kingston coming in delivering a weekly session of Brain Buddies.  These sessions have taught the children many strategies on how to cope with emotions and feelings.  It started with identifying feelings and emotions and how to recognise these in our own bodies and then taught us what our brain does when these feelings get too big.  We learnt that one part of our brain acts like a guard dog - making decisions to keep us safe and the other as a wise owl helping us make the right decisions.  Throughout the term we have been completing exercises and activities to help us make sense of our emotions.  Recently, we were given strategies to use when breaking down a worry:

S T E P.

S - say the problem out loud

T - think of a solution

E - explore consequences

P - pick the best solution

We have also been able to identify and name our ‘support team’ i.e. the friends, family and trusted adults we can go to if there are feelings we are having difficulties with. It has really helped us!

Your Year 5 child will come home with a project about the Ancient Egyptians.  This is due back in school the first week we are back - Tuesday 22nd April. We hope you have a good Easter break.
